Bamboo Charcoal Mouthguard Toothpaste

Bamboo Charcoal Mouthguard toothpaste from China is a different breed.

Apparently, it's popular in Japan, at least the Japanese brands. This one is special - after purchsed in China by my friend Meg, she brought it back to Colorado for me. The only English on the entire tube is the product name, "Bamboo Charcoal Mouthguard toothpaste."

The taste is subtle - so subtle that I could not figure out the flavor mix. So I called in for outside help.

My wife said it tasted a bit like baking soda toothpaste.

My daughter (13) provided more in-depth commentary: "It starts with a medicinal taste and ends with a minty flavor. There's a bit of a dusty feel. My teeth do not feel smooth after brushing."

The paste itself is very dark brown. Interestingly, the foam after brushing (when spit in a white sink) is mostly white, unlike a very similar looking paste from Thailand that I reviewed (which leaves a slightly brown-tinged foam).

Since I can't read the Chinese script, I am a bit hampered in providing more information. Any help from my Chinese readers would be appreciated!

Needless to say, this one is not even available from Amazon. You need a friend like Meg.

Strangely, on the box it reads "Protects enamel", which seems to go against what most professionals say. I bought 2 boxes from Amazon.

Thanks for the link to Amazon UK for that, Dave. I hope you enjoy the toothpaste. When I went to that link, the page said the item was currently unavailable, so I guess the only place to get more of that brand would be to go to China.

And it's not available on US Amazon.

You know the brand - but not the flavor. I bought this in Nairobi, Kenya. It was made in Egypt for the African marketplace. You won't find it in North America or Europe! It says on the tube, "Limited Edition" - so my guess is that it did not survive as a long-term flavor. Another sales point is that it is labeled "Flavalicious". There is a tension - if it tastes too good, then kids will eat it! And not to worry - it did not taste too good. (But then, I'm not a kid.) There is a small hint of mint. The paste is very light brownish white. And there is a helpful diagram on back showing how good it is to brush your teeth.

Translation: "extra-fresh pure". This has a very clean, almost astringent taste... think mouthwash. I like the aftertaste - it leaves my mouth feeling, as they say, extra fresh . Of course it falls into the minty category. The paste appears very similar to Aquafresh - but its taste is nothing like that! Odol-med3 is made in Germany and may not be available elsewhere. The glowing ice on the package might not be something you'd see in America; for some reason, ice and toothpaste are not a natural combination here. But I think that pairing is a good one. Miswak is a historic method of brushing teeth - reputed to have been used by Muslims over 7000 years ago ( Wikipedia ). Hundreds of years ago, Muslims conquered parts of the world, just like the Europeans. With their domination came spreading Arabic culture. Muslims on Lama Island, off the coast of Kenya, built beautiful buildings with similar architecture to some parts of Morocco, thousands of miles away. Miswak toothpastes are found in the north of England , India, Pakistan and other places around the world. This one's from Turkey. Colgate-Palmolive is a huge multinational corporation based in New York. And obviously, they have factories in Turkey. They sell Misvak toothpaste there but not in the USA. (Companies must adapt to each local market to make money.) Note that the Turkish spelling of miswak is "misvak." This toothpaste has a strong flavor - somewhat anise-like and very clean tasting.
